The last post you will need to read about your resume

You know that thing that you just spent hours updating and feverishly changing past tense to present tense and deciding if you should write in third person? Well, chances are a recruiter is only going to look at it for about 10 seconds and decide whether they want to pick up the phone and call you. This post is intended to break down the resume into 4 key areas with the perspective of a recruiter so you can help get that call.

1. Header
Example: Lets take a look at the header of my resume from 2010 vs 2013:

Elliot Hayes
San Francisco, CA
Email: @gmail.com
Phone: (***) *** ****

Objective:  Successful and driven sales professional with proven success in technical roles. Consistently produced strong results, while creating meaningful and profitable partnerships with clients.

Feedback: boring font, big name, has an objective check but it is a bit unclear. I would rate this about 50% of all resumes that I see and would have to dive in deeper to find out more about the person.

Now lets look at my most current resume header (remember 10 seconds):

Elliot Hayes
⇧ **** San Francisco, CA
☎ *** *** ****
 ******@gmail.com      www.about.me/*******

Skills          Technical Recruiting Sourcing Talent acquisition

Account Management Negotiation Pipeline management
SaaS/Startups Full cycle recruiting Compensation

Feedback: creative font, colorful, san francisco - check, an about.me profile, nice info flow, what's this? a clear defined skillset- Ok... tech recruiter, sourcing, talent acquisition  startups, full cycle, compensation. I am already on the phone calling this guy.

See how in less than 10 seconds you can decipher all of that data and paint an image of my career? The next step from there is defining these skills in your resume and eventually being able to tell a story about each one. "Ie Interviewer 1 question: tell me about sourcing for ruby engineers?"  (By the way the formatting is thrown out of alignment when I publish this post.)

2. Experience
Lets examine my current resume:

Experience     Connery Consulting, LLC August 2011 - present
Technical Recruiting Consultant
Clients: Zendesk, Lithium Technologies, BloomReach
• Managed a consistent, high volume flow of qualified candidates through active and passive   sourcing methods.
• Worked on a team of four recruiters that grew Zendesk 300% <1 data-blogger-escaped-period.="" data-blogger-escaped-span="" data-blogger-escaped-year="">
• Assisted Hiring Managers to develop exceptional job descriptions
• Managed external job postings and communication
• Handled multiple job requisitions simultaneously
• Conduct candidate references
• Developed pipeline of candidates in niche areas as determined by market needs and business strategies.
• Planned and assisted creative University recruiting events
• Worked closely with Hiring Managers to identify the right talent
• Sourced, recruited, and guided candidates through full cycle of interview process

Feedback: reads like a job description page, but the use and creativity of font and grey lines is appealing to the eyes and easy to read. The candidate consulted at some good companies in the bay area, worked on small teams, and made big impacts. This is where I would add more clear defined metrics to help provide information as quickly as possible. Again, 10 seconds.

3. Education

Education University of California, Berkeley    2005 - 2007
Bachelor Arts, Interdisciplinary Studies Major: Consumer Behavior and Cultural Attitudes
Thesis: “An Apple a Day”. Received an A+: How Apple and the iPhone/iPod will revolutionize the way consumers behave and purchase goods.

Feedback: UC Berkeley.

Tips: This part can be as simple as you like but just be sure to include your school and degree. I tell a little bit of a story with mine since I created my own major at Cal. I think it's cool, but it probably doesn't need to be on there.

4. Activities/ Honors/ Interests
The final piece of the resume where you should feel free to show off what you do outside of work and any accomplishments you have had, ie "what makes them googly?"

Activities and Honors
University of California Men’s Varsity Crew Team

• 2007 All Pac 10 Team Award
• 2006 Pac 10 Champion and IRA National Champion
• 2006 Pac 10 Newcomer of the Year Award

Interests Cycling Snowboarding Rowing

Cooking Guitar/Piano Reading
References Available Upon Request

In conclusion, the resume is a personal statement of your career that contains a lot of information and the best thing you can do is make the information that does count stand out amongst the noise. Feel free to critique my resume if you would like in the comments or add suggestions of your own. I hope this information was helpful to you.
